Several germplasm collections are mantained at Neiker-Tecnalia nowadays, emphasizing the following crops: potato (Solanum tuberosum L.), maize (Zea mays L.), tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) and french bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L). The potato variety collection must be pointed out, because it is a reference Bank in Spain, while the cultivars of maize, tomato and bean come, mainly, from the Basque Country and neighbouring zones. All of them possess a high genetic value that is necessary to preserve, not only like as interesting gene bank, but also because of their usefulness genetic breeding programs. The conservation of these materials implies a constant characterization and evaluation of the cultivars, a work that has been done by Neiker for several years now.
