The Basque Institute for Agricultural Research and Development (Neiker-Tecnalia) maintains, nowadays, a maize germplasm bank which contains 107 maize local varieties (Zea mays L.) from Basque country.

All of them have passport data and have been morphologically characterized. The aim of the maize germplasm bank is to maintain the local fitogenetic resources, the recovery of traditional varieties cultivated in the farms, and to preserve the genetic potential of the varieties.

Neiker-Tecnalia is the manager of multiplying and preserving these varieties.
