The Basque Institute for Agricultural Research and Development (Neiker-Tecnalia) maintains, nowadays, a potato germplasm bank which contains more than 500 potato varieties and around 80 wild potato species of the genus Solanum, constituting a reference bank of this crop in Spain.

The maintenance of the bank is done by micropropagation using in vitro culture techniques and criopreservation. Besides the maintenance of the varieties, the gradual characterization of new cultivars is also done, incorporating new interesting cultivars in to the Bank.

The collection contains old cultivars as Roja Riñón, dating back to the 18th century. Other local cultivars have been obtained in NEIKER, as Víctor, Turia, Duquesa, Buesa, Olalla, Nagore and Zorba. Some varieties on the verge of extinction as Ganade and Fina de Carvallo are maintained too. On the other hand the bank contains a wide collection of varieties from Tenerife and La Palma islands.
