The Basque Institute for Agricultural Research and Development (Neiker-Tecnalia) maintains, nowadays, a tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) germplasm bank which contains 94 local varieties from Basque country. All of them have passport data and have been morphologically characterized.

The research has showed the existence of a wide genetic variability, and based on the founded biodiversity we can emphasize the agronomic potential of some of the varieties. All of the varieties are maintained in the germplasm bank of Neiker-Tecnalia, which has the responsibility to multiply and offer them to the agricultural sector.
